NEED TO KNOW

  • Meryl Streep said her portrayal of Miranda Priestly was based on directors Mike Nichols and Clint Eastwood, not Wintour

  • Celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar claimed she was the real-life inspiration for Emily Blunt’s character

The iconic characters inThe Devil Wears Pradamay seem too over-the-top to be true, but they were inspired by real-life figures in fashion.

Adapted fromLauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name, the cult classic follows aspiring journalist Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) as she lands a job as an assistant to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of the esteemed high-fashion magazine,Runway.

As Andy navigates the cutthroat industry and her sharp-tongued coworker Emily (Emily Blunt), she’s forced to decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to succeed.

Because the story was rooted in Weisberger’s experience working as an assistant toAnna WintouratVogue, fans were quick to draw comparisons between the film’s characters and the real people who may have inspired them — connections those figures have addressed in the years since the film’s release.

From Meryl Streep’s loosely inspired take on Anna Wintour to Emily Blunt’s portrayal of a sharp-tongued assistant believed to be based on Leslie Fremar, see the cast ofThe Devil Wears Pradaside by side with the real people behind the characters.

The 2006 film starred Hathaway as Andy, a fresh-faced journalist who lands a coveted assistant job atRunway.

When reflecting on the role, the actress told PEOPLE in April 2026 that her character "was really worried about getting it right and shereally wanted to please her boss.”

Which is something the real Andy can relate to.

Weisberger wroteThe Devil Wears Pradaafter spending less than a year working as an assistant for Wintour. However, she's maintained that the book "wasn’t an attempt to take anyone down or exact some sort of revenge."

"I was just writing something that felt true to my experience as an assistant in very close proximity to a powerful woman," she wrote in an April 2026 essay forVogue. "One who filled me with abject terror."

Streep starred as the ultimate bad boss inThe Devil Wears Prada, but she has pushed back on the idea that her character was a direct portrayal of Wintour.

Instead, the actress has said she drew inspiration from not one buttwo male directors.

“I was just basically imitatingMike Nicholsthat whole time,” she joked during an April 2026 appearance onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert. "If Mike Nichols andClint Eastwoodhad a baby, it would be Miranda Priestly."

Despite Streep’s explanation, many fans have continued to link the formidable fashion editor to Wintour — a comparison the longtime editor has acknowledged.

"I’d like to say it’s such an honor to be played by Meryl, however distant Miranda is from myself," Wintour said in an April 2026 conversation with the actress forVogue. "Who wouldn’t think that that wasn’t the most extraordinary gift?"

Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, inspired by Leslie Fremar

Though Weisberger hasn't confirmed the real-life inspiration behind Blunt's high-strung character, celebrity stylistLeslie Fremarclaimed that she was the "Emily" from the book and film.

“No, I know I am,” she toldVogue'sThe Run-Throughin April 2026. “I am Emily.”

The formerVogueassistant hired Weisberger as Wintour's junior assistant in 1999, and they worked together for 8 months.

Though Blunt hasn't spoken about the potential real-life tie, Freman said she once revealed her identity to the actress.

“I said to her, I was like, ‘I just need to let you know, I'm Emily,' ” she recalled. “She was not that interested, to be honest. I thought I was gonna get this, like, huge reaction. Like, no. It was like, ‘Oh, OK.' ”

Jaden McDaniels and the feisty Timberwolves oust the Nuggets and move on to meet the Spurs

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — TheMinnesota Timberwolveshad plenty of lulls during the regular season, seemingly coasting at times while struggling to recapture the form that fueled them to consecutive Western Conference finals appearances over the last two years.

The postseason switch sure got flipped against the rival Denver Nuggets, as the players promised all along. The energy and urgency was never greater than in the series-clinchingGame 6 victoryon Thursday, when the determined Timberwolves shook off the absence of their three best guards and beat the Nuggets 110-98.

“Still part of our growth,” coach Chris Finch said. “We’ve been really good with the high moments. Our consistency sometimes throughout the season isn’t always there, which we don’t really like about ourselves, but we know we have it in ourselves to meet these moments.”

Jaden McDaniels clearly does.

Nobody on the Timberwolves embodies the mercurial nature of this close-knit but often-moody team than McDaniels, the sixth-year forward who made a name for himself in this series.

Tirelessly chasing All-Star guard Jamal Murray around screens and everywhere he tried to go along the perimeter, limiting him to 4-for-17 shooting in Game 6, McDaniels did even more on the offensive end.

With a big chunk of the team's shot creation missing due to injuries to Anthony Edwards, Donte DiVincenzo and Ayo Dosunmu, McDaniels went 13 for 25 from the floor for 32 points with 10 rebounds.

“What I was the most proud about him was just his emotional control, being able to stay poised, not overreact to adversity, calls or missed shots, or mistakes,” teammate Rudy Gobert said. "He stayed present, and he stepped up big time when we needed him the most, so I’m really, really proud of him.”

McDaniels tossed even more spice into thiswell-developed rivalryearly in the series with his blanket “bad defenders” jab at the opponent, and he made no secret of the motivation he gets from seeing “Denver” or “Nuggets” sewed on the other team's jersey.

“The only thing I said to him, after he had made his comments, was, ‘Now it’s time to back it up,’” Finch said. “And talking doesn’t matter. You've got to go do it. I knew he was going to put the effort in, so he was ready for it, and he owned it, and he responded.”

McDaniels later irked Nuggets star Nikola Jokic by taking an uncontested layup in the closing seconds of Minnesota's blowout win in Game 4, sparking a brief shoving match.

McDaniels had his worst game of the series in the loss in Game 5 on Monday, when he was booed often by the Denver crowd, but he responded on his home court with one of the best games of his career.

With the Timberwolves trying to put away the game, McDaniels delivered the dagger shot — swishing his signature mid-range pull-up to give them a seven-point lead with 1:06 to play. Then he intercepted a harried pass by Jokic to get the ball back and start a parade to the line.

Jokic gave McDaniels a hug after the final horn, a sign of respect from the three-time NBA MVP despite the irritation he caused all series long.

“I’m just happy it’s over, happy we were able to come out on top,” McDaniels said. “Stuff was said. I’m just happy we were all able to prove our point, get the win and move on to the next round.”

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have been waiting. They'll host Game 1 on Monday.

“I figured the real winner of this series was going to be San Antonio, because both these teams were going to take a lot of pieces out of each other, and did,” Finch said. “So I’m not sure what we have left standing there before we go down there.”

Even if they're short-handed and overmatched, the Timberwolves are a good bet to put up a strong fight.

“You have to believe that you can win, no matter what,” Gobert said. "Obviously we’re missing some pretty important players, right? But no matter who’s out there, we believe in our defense. We believe in trusting one another. Anything’s possible.”

All-time best Illinois HS football star? Vote in '250 for 250' poll

While Illinois is not the first state that comes to mind when it comes to high school football, the Prairie State has had its fair share of success sending players to college and then the pros.

USA TODAY Sports

As theUnited States approaches its 250th anniversary, USA TODAY Sports will celebrate the 250 greatest American sports figures of all time. Alongside that national recognition, the USA TODAY Network will spotlight the roots of the country’s sports culture: the high school athletes and sports figures who shaped communities and defined their states.

So, who among the best of the best has defined the Friday Night Lights in Illinois?

More:Who is the greatest Texas high school football legend of all time? Vote now!

These are our selections for the football players who defined Illinois. The 15 players (listed in alphabetical order) were all standout players at the high school level before they eventually went on to play at both the college and professional ranks.

Did we miss someone? There's a spot for you to write in your own candidate who wasn't included on our list of 15.

Dick Butkus, FB/LB, Chicago Vocational

Fittingly, the list kicks off with a player who only played in Illinois for his entire football career. But before he shone with the Illinois Illini Fighting Illini and the Chicago Bears, the Pro Football Hall of Famer played high school football in the state. He was named Chicago's Player of the Year as a junior.

Gary Fencik, DB, Barrington

Fencik, one of the singers of "The Super Bowl Shuffle," on the 1985 Chicago Bears, actually began his career at Barrington High School. Fencik graduated from Barrington in 1972 before attending Yale and having an NFL career with the Bears.

Otto Graham, RB, Waukegan

Before becoming a star NFL QB, Graham began his high school career at Waukegan High School, where he was all-state in football and basketball. He also excelled as a musician, playing the violin, French horn and cornet.

Red Grange, RB, Wheaton

The "Galloping Ghost"scored 36 touchdowns in his junior season, leading Wheaton to an undefeated season. He earned 16 varsity letters in football, baseball, basketball and track in high school, finishing with 75 total touchdowns. The field at Wheaton Warrenville South High School is named after Grange.

George Halas, End, Crane

The former founder, owner, player and coach of the Chicago Bears played football, baseball and track at Crane Technical High School. Baseball was his best sport in high school, where he won a state championship as a senior.

Ty Isaac (Joliet Catholic)

As a junior, Isaac rushed for 515 yards and six touchdowns on 26 carries in the 2011 state Class 5A championship game. He finished with 2,629 yards and 51 touchdowns in that junior season. Despite injuries, Isaac had 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior.

Johnny Lattner, HB, Fenwick

The 1953 Heisman Trophy winner is the only Illinois high school player to earn the honors. In his senior season, Lattner averaged 18 yards per carry. He received more than 90 scholarships before deciding to attend Notre Dame.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Niles West

Mendenhall became a 5-star recruit after rushing for 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns as a sophomore. He followed that up with 1,831 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior and then 1,453 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior. He played in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Donovan McNabb, QB, Mt. Carmel

Along with teammates Simeon Rice and Matt Cushing, McNabb led Mt. Carmel to a state championship in football in 1991. He led the program to the Chicago Prep Bowl championship in 1993 as a senior. He was also a star in track and in basketball, where he played with future NBA star Antoine Walker.

Ray Nitschke, LB, Proviso Township

The future Hall of Fame linebacker with the Green Bay Packers began his career in high school at Proviso Township (now Proviso East High School), where he was a star quarterback and safety. He excelled despite not playing his sophomore year, when he was ruled ineligible due to academic reasons.

James Robinson, RB, Rockford Lutheran

Robinson holds the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) record for career rushing yards (9,045) and rushing touchdowns (158). As a senior, he recorded 2,461 yards and 44 touchdowns, earning Class 4A All-State honors.

He led Crete-Monee to a 6A state championship as a senior, finishing the year with 81 catches for 1,424 yards and 16 touchdowns and rushing for 257 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 56 tackles and six interceptions on defense.

Jonas Williams, QB, Bolingbrook

Amal Clooneywas dripping in diamonds in the Big Apple.

On Monday, April 27, the human rights lawyer, 48, appeared at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala alongside her husbandGeorge Clooney, who was being honored at the event. Amal opted for a purple Balenciaga peplum-style mini dress, which she teamed with a gold clutch bag and matching heels. George, 64, looked dapper in a black tuxedo.

The focal point of Amal's ensemble was her jewelry: Cartier'sPanthère de Cartier earringsthat retail for $124,000 and are set with four emeralds and a whopping 596 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling 4.32 carats.

The couple posed for a series of photos on the red carpet before heading inside for the event, which recognizes an individual's “significant contributions to the art of cinema,” per the Lincoln Centerwebsite.

The award is named after its first honoree, Charlie Chaplin, with all proceeds from the annual gala fundraiser “going to support our nonprofit organization's mission to celebrate cinema as an essential art form and foster a vibrant home for film culture to thrive.”
