Snoop Dogg fans baffled to learn wholesome origin of stage name after 36 years

Despite maintaining a public presence for more than 36 years, fans ofSnoop Doggare surprised to discoverthe rapper and actor's birth name, along with the heartwarming story behind his stage name.

It's quite typical for celebrities to adopt a stage name for their work in the entertainment world. While these names frequently derive from variations of their given names or middle names, others take a more imaginative route when selecting the name they wish to be recognized by. This practice is particularly common among singers, as their names become their trademark and persona, while simultaneously helping to maintain boundaries between their private lives and public image.

One prominent rapper and actor who opted for a stage name throughout his entertainment career is Snoop Dogg, whorecently acquired a soccer team in Wales.. And while he initially performed as 'Snoop Doggy Dogg', he eventually condensed it to 'Snoop Dogg', which remains how millions of supporters worldwide recognize him, even 35 years into his professional journey.

However, some admirers have been astonished to discover the rapper's actual name, as it took them nearly three decades to uncover. This was true for one individual, who posted toReddit's'Today I learned' community to reveal their discovery.

"TIL Snoop Dogg's real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr. His "Snoop Dogg" nickname came from his mother who thought he looked like Snoopy from the Peanuts," the post's title stated, as they proceeded to reference the rapper's Wikipedia entry.

Snoop Dogg has openly shared how his mother inspired his iconic stage name. During an appearance on theKelly Clarksonshow, he explained the origins of his moniker.

"How did you end up going by Snoop?" Kelly asked the rapper, questioning whether the nickname initially began as 'Snoopy'.

"As a kid, I watched Charlie Brown, and I watched Snoopy so much, my mother was like 'you watch him so damn much, you're starting to look like him'," Snoopy revealed in the interview.

He continued: "And I swear to you, my whole life, I have had 50 years with my mother, and she never called me by my real name a day in her life. She called me Snoopy, Snoopy, Snoopy, that's it. That's all."

Snoop Dogg's mother, Beverly Tate, tragically passed away on October 24, 2021, aged 70, following a battle with an undisclosed illness. Snoop Dogg announced her death on social media, calling her an "angel" and subsequently honoring her memory during his shows.

Viewers quickly flooded the comments section with reactions, with many applauding his mother for the distinctive nickname.

"Even though this is the first time I'm hearing, about how Snoop Dogg got his stage name, and listening to his story I had a feeling that's how he'd gotten the name, because it makes sense," one viewer wrote.

Another commented: "So cute he went with his mom's given nickname.

"I had NO IDEA that WHERE SNOOP DOG CAME FROM!!!!" another revealed, while a fourth person commented: "Awe love this. Momma snoop must be the cutest. super vibe Momma Snoop."

Byron Buxton's RBI double in 11th inning gives Twins a 2-1 victory over Guardians

CLEVELAND (AP) — Byron Buxton doubled off the wall in left-center with one out in the 11th inning, scoring automatic runner Matt Wallner, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 on Saturday night.

Buxton also drove in Minnesota’s first run and had its only other hit, belting his 22nd career leadoff homer on the third pitch of the game from Tanner Bibee. The Twins and Guardians each finished with two hits.

Cleveland loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and 10th, but Eric Orze (1-1) worked his way out of both jams in his 1 2/3 innings. Luis García pitched the 11th for his first save.

Rule 5 Draft selection Peyton Pallette (1-2) allowed one unearned run in two innings as AL Central Division leader Cleveland had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Buxton has 13 homers — all in his last 23 games — and is two behind MLB leaders Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox. Minnesota is 20-40 against the Guardians since the start of the 2022 season.

The Guardians tied it at 1-all in the fourth when José Ramírez singled off Joe Ryan, stole second base and scored on Kyle Manzardo’s hit up the middle. Ryan worked six innings, giving up two hits.

Bibee, who has five losses and four no-decisions this season, struck out a season-high nine over six innings.

In the sixth, Bibee collided with catcher Austin Hedges when both were attempting to grab a popup by Brooks Lee. Hedges dropped the ball, Bibee was charged with the error and Lee ran to second base, but was stranded there.

The first pitch was delayed by 2 hours and 6 minutes because of heavy thunderstorms.

When is Luka Doncic coming back? Injury update for Lakers-Thunder NBA Playoffs Game 3

Luka Dončić's absence from the court will continue as he was officially ruled out Friday forGame 3 of the Western Conference semifinalsbetween theOKC Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers.

USA TODAY

The Thunder leads 2-0 as the best-of-seven series shifts to Los Angeles.

Doncic has been sidelined sinceApril 2 with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain. The superstar guard told the media Wednesday that he has started running, but he hasn't yet been cleared for full contact.

"I'm just doing everything I can," Doncic said. "Every day, I'm doing things I'm supposed to do. Obviously, I'm recovering, and now I'm working. The doctor said eight weeks at the beginning of the first MRI. So I’m just going day by day, and I feel better every day.”

Doncic received that first MRI on April 3, which was nearly five weeks ago. If the eight-week recovery timeline holds up, he'd miss the entire second-round series against OKC.

"I don't think people understand how frustrating it is," Doncic said. "All I want to do is play basketball, especially this time (of year). It's the best time to play basketball. It's very frustrating. Seeing what my team is doing, I'm very proud of them. But it's been very tough just to sit and watch them play."

Duke of Richmond: ‘In Britain we completely indulge our dogs’

TheDuke of Richmondis in a hurry. It’s a sunny spring afternoon at the historic Goodwood Estate, and his glossy black Mini Cooper is kicking up dust as it flies down the road between immaculately manicured emerald lawns. Awaiting his arrival, I watch the scene from a first-floor window in the Kennels, an 18th-century compound crafted specifically to house his ancestors’ foxhounds in ultimate luxury. Nowadays, it serves as a deluxe clubhouse for the members of various Goodwood associations, including their canine companions (who can join for £65).

The Telegraph The Duke of Richmond photographed for The Telegraph with Winston the dachshund and Lito the spaniel at the Kennels, Goodwood

“It’s a very grand building, you know – the most luxurious dog house in the world,” the Duke (also known as Charles Gordon-Lennox) proudly boasts when he arrives, plonking himself down in a lovingly battered leather armchair. Surrounding us, portraits of distinguished doggies adorn stone walls, and artfully designed kennels nestle seamlessly among tasteful furniture; the entire property is an upper-crust ode to the British obsession with dogs.

'Doga' (dog yoga) in the studio at the Goodwood Kennels

We are meeting to discuss Goodwoof, a lavish dog festival that is due to take place at the Kennels on May 16 and 17. “We’ve got pet masseurs flying in from LA to massage the dogs,” the Duke says in his distinguished vocal fry, clearly amused. “There’s dog yoga and pilates, a place to dance with your dog that we call Ministry of Hound, and instead of Norland nannies – the fancy nannies for your children – we have Gnawland Nannies for VIP guests. We’ll take your dog away for a bit and give you a rest.”

He laughs, well aware of how absurd this all sounds. “The puns are terrible and endless. We keep coming up with these potty things, but anyway, it’s fun.”

Goodwoof, the Duke of Richmond's annual canine festival at Goodwood

Since taking on the management of the family’s country pile in the 1990s, the enterprising Duke has turned it into a multimillion-pound events compound – an aristocratic playground of sorts, playing host to, among other things, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a pulse-racing car rally, and Goodwood Revival, a classic car and vintage fashion showcase.

This is the fifth year of Goodwoof, and the Duke says they are expecting more than 13,000 canines. I suspect it will require a lot of doggy bags. There will also be a dog-and-owner fashion show, Chien Charmant, with prizes provided by Hermès for “the best six legs”.

“There’s no dress code at Goodwoof, it’s outdoors. But we’d rather people made a bit of an effort. I’ll definitely wear a suit,” he says. Known for his dapper tailoring, “casual” is not a word in the Duke’s sartorial vocabulary, though he apologises for being underdressed today (his crisp suit jacket, shiny cufflinks and the gleaming chunk of silverware on his wrist say otherwise).

The Duke of Richmond with Lito (left) and Ruby at Goodwoof 2022

The events list continues: there’s “Barkitecture”, a kennel design competition among world-renowned architects, co-curated byGrand Designs’Kevin McCloud. (The theme this year is “dogs in space”, in honour of the late photographerMartin Parr’s rather eccentric collection of Russian space dog memorabilia.)

Then there are tarot card readings, children’s book readings by Michael Morpurgo, and vets and trainers available to get Rover on his best behaviour. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might also spot the Princess of Wales’s brother,James Middleton, cycling round the grounds with a basket full of pups. He and his black spaniel Ella are regulars at the event.

If it all sounds like circus pageantry, then so be it; the Duke is the Savile Row-suited ring leader. With human birth rates on the decline in Britain and dog ownership on the up, ourcanines have become like furry children, and it seems we’re content to spoil them accordingly; the UK pet care market is now a multi-billion-pound industry.

Despite the theatrics, Goodwoof continues a proud history. “We wouldn’t do anything at Goodwood that isn’t authentic,” says the Duke. “The house was started because of the fox hunt.” Up until now, he’s been leaning back and experiencing the full support of the chair, his legs loosely crossed, and I do get the sense I’m meeting him in the comfort of his own home. But as he switches gears from levity to legacy, he tents his fingers authoritatively: “Anyone serious in London society would have been hunting at Charlton, a mile away; the first Duke of Richmond bought Goodwood House because of that.”

A diptych of dogs inside the Kennels

But it was the third Duke who really started spoiling the hounds in 1787 when he built the Kennels. Famously, 100 years before the main house had central heating, he had it installed in the elaborate dog house to the tune of £6,000 – that’s approximately £1.2m today. Described as plates of iron heated by fire, the system was essentially an Aga for dogs. A “Daga”, if you will.

Today, instead of a warm bed and immortalisation in a grand oil painting, hounds get a custom water bowl that comes with membership to the Kennels and access to state-of-the-art beds like the one byrenowned architect Norman Foster, the brain behind the Gherkin and the Millennium bridge. “I think he spent a fortune making it,” the Duke tells me with a conspiratorial smile. We’re standing with our heads cocked, contemplating a geodesic tortoiseshell of a kennel crafted in the finest cherry wood. It was a runner-up in the Barkitecture competition of 2022.

norman foster kennel

The Duke himself grew up with lurchers (“fantastic for hare hunting”) and kept rescue dogs during his younger years in London. But these days, he continues the family history of keeping spaniels with eight-year-old cocker Lito: “She’s a working cocker, but poor thing, she hasn’t been trained at all. We feel bad about that.”

Her sidekick is Winston, a yappy dachshund. “He was bought in Covid and is actually my daughter’s dog, but now she’s away working in London, so we’ve got him. In Britain, we completely indulge our dogs. They’re like members of the family.”

Bonnie at Goodwoof 2023, a dog event held at Goodwood Estate, Chichester

His commitment to these words was put to the test recently, when Lito needed a life-saving operation. I ask how much it cost, and he puts his hand to his brow. “Thousands and thousands,” he sighs. “We thought we had pet insurance, and then didn’t. But there wasn’t a moment of hesitation.”

Even the aristocracy isn’t immune to the shock of unforeseen veterinary fees, it seems. The difference, of course, is that for some ordinary dog owners thebill can prove prohibitive, which might explain why shelters are now seeing a rise in pet abandonment. Arecent study, published in the journalAnimals, found that in the UK and Republic of Ireland, the number of stray dogs entering shelters jumped from 16,310 in 2021 to 23,287 in 2023, and the rate of euthanisation in that group rose from 1.9 per cent to 6.3 per cent.

Acknowledging this crisis, the Duke has made Battersea Dogs & Cats Home Goodwoof’s official charity partner. Money raised from the auction of the “Barkitecture” kennels will go directly to the group, while the Duke will also marshal a morning parade of rescue dogs, kicking off the festivities by journeying from Goodwood House to the Kennels.

Perhaps the image of the Duke leading an oompah band and a lineup of dachshunds through the woods – as he did at last year’s Goodwoof – is a slight evolution from the aristocrat thundering by on horseback, preceded by a pack of foxhounds. But if there’s one thing the British upper crust is willing to let its stiff upper lip relax into a smile for, it’s the dogs.

Tech's potential super regional matchup is most intriguing here as SA has Tennessee as the No. 6 national seed, which would put the Red Raiders in Knoxville for a spot in the WCWS if both teams make it out of their respective regionals.

There's no shortage of storylines with this one. It started when former Tech head coach Craig Snider left Lubbock to become an assistant with theVolsand escalated this summer when Taylor Pannell transferred from Tennessee to Tech, which kickstarted the offseason campaign to blacklist the Red Raiders.

Fox announced Monday that a new version of the drama, which originally aired from 1984 to 1989, will debut on Fox in the 2027–2028 season.

CostarringMichael Landonas Jonathan Smith and Victor French, Landon'sLittle House on the Prairiecostar, as Mark Gordon, the drama depicted Landon as an angel who had returned to Earth to help people. French was the cop who made Jonathan's angelic acts possible.

Writer and producer Jason Katims, who's known for his work on shows includingFriday Night LightsandParenthood, will serve as showrunner. Katims will also produce as part of a team that includes Cindy Landon, Michael's widow, of Michael Landon Productions, and Amblin Television.

"Highway to Heavenhas always been about connection, compassion and the idea that small acts can have big ripple effects and make a lasting difference," said Cindy, who married Michael in 1983. "I'm proud to help carry Michael’s legacy forward with partners like Fox and Amblin, who understand the heart of this series and are bringing it to a new generation at just the right moment."

In his own statement Katims said, "I'm excited by the challenge of putting a contemporary lens on this classic tale. The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me — and fun. I love going outside my comfort zone to tell a tale about someone trying to do better as an angel than he did as a man."

Lifetime aired anupdated movie versionofHighway to Heaven, which starred Jill Scott as the angel, in 2021.

Michael Landondiedof pancreatic cancer in 1991. In addition toHighway to Heaven, he was known for having starred in and often written and produced the TV seriesLittle House on the Prairie, between 1974 and 1983. Before that, he starred on the Western showBonanza, in which he played "Little Joe" from 1959 to 1973.

But unlike withLittle HouseandBonanza, Landon was the creator ofHighway to Heaven, which earned seven Emmy nominations during its run.

"I was driving through Beverly Hills to pick up my kids on a Friday night, and people were honking at each other," Landon told theLos Angeles Timesin January 1988, of the night he conceived the project. "There is no worse place for that than Beverly Hills; I think when people have a little bit more money, they really believe that the Red Sea will part and their car will go forward."

He continued, "And I thought, ‘Why is everybody so angry? If they would just spend that same time being nice. It's obvious the flow of traffic is going to go much better if everybody has his opportunity.'"

Colts sign 12 undrafted rookies following 2026 NFL draft

TheIndianapolis Coltsannounced that they'vesigned12 undrafted rookies following the 2026 NFL draft.

USA TODAY

Making the 53-man roster for an undrafted rookie is always going to be an uphill battle, but in recent years, we've seen two UDFAs accomplish that feat.

In 2024, it was offensive lineman Dalton Tucker, and last year it was cornerback Johnathan Edwards.

When it comes to making a roster push as a UDFA, of course, how you perform throughout training camp and the preseason is critical, but you also have to play a position where there is a roster spot available.

Several of these players will likely end up on theColts' practice squad.

Lakers criticize officiating after Game 2 loss to Thunder in West semis

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Lakers coach JJ Redick criticized the way LeBron James is officiated and guard Austin Reaves complained about treatment from the referees afterLos Angeles lost 125-107 to the Oklahoma City Thunderon Thursday night.

A number of Lakers players gathered around the referees at midcourt after the game and Reaves voiced his frustration to crew chief John Goble. He felt that while players were jockeying for position during a jump ball during the game, Goble crossed the line.

“At the end of the day, we’re grown men and I just didn’t feel like he needed to yell in my face like that,” Reaves said. “I told him that. I wasn’t disrespectful. I told him if I did that to him first, I would’ve gotten a tech. I feel like the only reason I didn’t get a tech was because he knew he was in the wrong. I felt disrespected.”

Reaves, Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes all finished with five fouls. The Thunder took 26 free throws to 21 for the Lakers. The loss sends Los Angeles home facing a 2-0 deficit heading into Game 3 on Saturday.

Redick doesn't think a team with the No. 1 seed and the reigning MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander needs extra help from the officials.

“They’re hard enough to play," Redick said. "They’re hard to play, and you’ve got to be able to just call them. They foul. They do foul.”

James, still effective at attacking the rim at age 41, has attempted just five throws in two games in the series.

“LeBron has the worst whistle of any star player I've ever seen. The smaller guys, because they can be theatric, they typically draw more fouls, and the bigger players that are built like LeBron, it’s hard for them,” Redick said. “They get clobbered, and he got clobbered again tonight a bunch.”

On several occasions, Lakers players were incredulous after calls — or no-calls — from the crew. While the Lakers talked to the officials during and after the game, the Thunder players stayed calm. Redick believes that might have helped them.

“I think some of the reason that they’re officiated the way they are is because they don’t show emotion,” Redick said. "And that’s a credit to them. I mean, they really take the emotion out of the game. They’re super tight-knit. They don’t complain to the officials, and maybe they’re the beneficiaries of that, I don’t know.”

Cameron Delano upsets Alex the Terrible in BKFC's Blood 4 Blood

DAYTONA BEACH — Fans watched limbs fly on the floor of the Ocean Center at the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship's Blood 4 Blood event on May 6, and that goes for both the boxing and heavy-metal mosh pits.

USA TODAY

The unique hybrid featured four bare-knuckle matches separated by brief heavy metal concerts from Slaughter to Prevail, Crowbar, Malevolence, Black Label Society and a pre-show from Chained Saint.

Slaughter to Prevail kicked off the night with a performance led by lead vocalist Aleksandr Shikolay, better known as Alex the Terrible in the bare-knuckle fighting and metal scenes. In a twist fitting for the event, Shikolay boxed professional bull rider Cameron Delano a few hours later in the main event.

Despite being a sizable underdog, it was Delano that took the victory against fan-favorite Alex the Terrible in what turned out to be the longest fight of the night.

Delano knocked Shikolay on his back with a straight right to the nose 15 seconds into the first round. Delano, who was backed against the ropes, barely beat a Shikolay punch that was thrown at him at the exact same time.

Shikolay wasn’t able to beat the 10-second count, and the fight was waved off 29 seconds into the third round.

“Alex is a tough son of a [expletive],” Delano said in his post-fight interview in the ring. “I knew in that third round, we were about to go [expletive] at it, so I appreciate it, I love him for it, and I’m a huge fan.”

The fight between two 1-0-0 fighters ended with Delano keeping his unbeaten record after knocking down Shikolay multiple times over the three rounds. Shikolay fell to 1-1.

Shikolay, who helped organize the event and even fought for free, according to an interview with MMA Fighting, said he broke his nose from Delano’s punch. However, he’ll still be performing with Slaughter to Prevail when the band plays at Rockville on Sunday.

“Of course I’m very sad I lost, it [expletive] sucks,” Shikolay said. “But sometimes shit happens, and I feel sad, but at the same time, I feel so [expletive] happy because we made this, Blood 4 Blood.”

Cameron “The Bull” Delano boxes Alex “The Terrible” Shikolay during the Blood 4 Blood event at the Ocean Center on May 6, 2026, kicking off the festivities for Welcome to Rockville.

Blood 4 Blood’s debut fight was between Brock Walker and Sergey “Kratos” Kalinin, who helped corner Shikolay against Delano.

For Kalinin, it was also his BKFC debut after spending more than a decade bare-knuckle boxing in Russian promotions, such as Top Dog. Walker also wasn’t a stranger to combat sports as a former amateur MMA fighter dating back to 2012.

The fight hardly lasted a minute, and it was Kalinin that walked away as the victor.

Donning boxing shorts made purely out of animal fur, the fighter listed only as “Kratos” on Blood 4 Blood’s card knocked down Walker four times before earning the TKO in 1:06.

Taylor “Killa Bee” Starling and Sydney Smith, who replaced Marisol Ruelas on a week’s notice, were the first pair to make it out of the first round, although barely.

Starling, the most experienced BKFC fighter on the card with a 5-4 record, dominated the first round with multiple combos that cut Smith’s face. Smith did answer and busted Starling’s nose and gave her a black eye, but the damage was mostly one-sided.

The second round is when Starling ended the bout.

Starling wobbled Smith with an overhand right that wobbled the Charlottesville, Virginia, native before throwing a flurry of punches that earned her the TKO 1:32 into the second round.

Jake Bostwick earned the first true knockout of the night in his co-main event against Roderick Stewart.

Bostwick and Stewart had the most cautious first round of Wednesday night, as both fighters connected on a few punches and briefly met in the clinch. But ultimately damage was negligible and the round could’ve been scored either way.

The second round was similar until Bostwick found an opening. After backing Stewart to the ropes, Bostwick landed a close-range right cross clean on the chin with Stewart’s left arm by his side.

Stewart dropped to a knee and couldn’t return to his feet within 10 seconds to continue the fight.

During an appearance at the Netflix Is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny with David Letterman event at The Montalban Theater in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 7, Short, 76, appeared on a panel alongside fellow comediansDavid LettermanandPaul Shafferand discussed topics including his early career, friendship withSteve Martinand his late wifeNancy Dolman.

Letterman, 79, also commented on Short’s upcoming Netflix documentary film,Marty, Life Is Short, and noted that after watching the doc the “one thing that struck me was your childhood.”

“You came from a funny Irish Catholic family and then suddenly your brother died in a car accident. And then your mother got cancer. And then your father died. That’s an incredible amount of loss very early,” Letterman told Short.

“Yeah, I was around 20,” replied Short. “My older brother David died first. He was the star of the family. Then my mother was diagnosed with cancer at his funeral and died three years later. My father died the year after that.”

“So there was definitely a period where life changed completely,” added Short, noting that his mother, who was a violinist, was the first female concertmaster in North America and was "an extraordinary musician."

Short was just 12 when his brother died, while his mother and father, who was a steel executive, died before he was 21.

In an early profile with PEOPLE, Short, who was 34 at the time, shared thetouching way he coped with the tragedy his family has experienced.

"There isn't a period of my life that I don't like to think about or wouldn't go back to,” he told PEOPLE at the time. "It sounds like a tragic family, but it really isn't.”

"My mother had cancer, and she had been ill and then in remission since I was 13. She was a remarkable person; both my parents were. So I never looked at it as if it was a tragedy — that I didn't have them my whole life. You learn some sense of priorities. Our whole family took the attitude that if you have wonderful moments, don't second-guess them, just enjoy them."

Short’s actress wife Dolmandied in August 2010from ovarian cancer. The pair sharedthree children, sons Oliver, 40, and Henry, 36, and daughter Katherine, who died in February of this year.
